Northbound towards the lush valleys of Mount Kinabalu which takes you pass the town of Inanam and Menggatal. As you approach the small town of Kiulu in Tamparuli District, selection is made by the river guide for a suitable starting point. Upon arrival, you will be introduced the use of the equipment and briefed on the safety and rafting techniques.

The ride down one of Borneo's scenic rivers over gentle rapids, passes lush green jungle forests and Dusun orchards and villages.

Kiulu is a scenic countryside located 75 kilometers east of Kota Kinabalu, the gateway to Borneo Sabah. Kiulu covers the southern part of the district of Tuaran whose serene mountainous terrain forms part of the Crocker Range stretching to as high as 4000 feet above sea-level.

Rushing out of its highland forests are many streams and rivers which converged into the Kiulu valleys to form the grade 2 kiulu river, a hub for white water rafting and traditional bamboo rafting in Sabah . As a matter of fact, Kiulu is named after a tributary that meanders the Mongkonihab-Poturidong village into the main kiulu river.

Kiulu has further come into the tourism lime-light as a destination for river adventure through its annual indigenous eco-sports race namely the Kiulu 4M Bamboo Rafting Challenge which has now become a Annual State Tourism and Visit Malaysia Year event. This race involves four disciplines that start with the letter M. In the kadazandusun language, the 4M stands for: Manangkus (running), Mamangkar (bamboo rafting), Manampatau (swimming with a bamboo pole), Mamarampanau (walking or running on bamboo stilts).

Kiulu is also known for its peaceful and safe riverside camping at Malangang Camp Ground and river fish breeding conservation/protection efforts (known locally as “bombon/tagal”).

In addition, Kiulu offers a hospitable homestay service at Mitabang Homestay Kg. Tulung-Mantob, where one can have a taste of the warmth, peace loving and healthy life-style of the Sabah Borneo Dusun community.Villagers at Mitabang Homestay are close-knit, friendly and still adhering the noble traditions/cultural values of the dusun people. One of such values is the practice of “mitabang/” or “mogitatabang”, which means merrily helping one another or working together to do a heavy/big task. Mitabang/mogitatabang is prevalent in the livelihood of the villagers particularly in planting and harvesting hill/wet paddy. Hence, Mitabang Homestay is named to quest for a harmonious and better tomorrow.
