Malaysia's Top 10 Honeymoon Spots

Honeymoon trends among jet setters have changed over the years. Stays in European castles and Caribbean tropical islands are a thing of the past. Today's couples are seeking new ways to celebrate their union as well as new destinations. You can't go wrong in seeking Malaysia as a honeymoon destination given the current strength of the US dollar against the ringgit and so many beautiful locations in the country to choose from. Whatever your taste, here are Malaysia's top ten honeymoon spots, as in the opinion of the writer.

No 1. Pangkor Laut Island, Perak
"I almost cried when I saw how beautiful God has made this paradise." So said world-famous tenor Luciano Pavarotti of Pangkor Laut Island, who performed at the opening of the island's exclusive resort in 1994. Then, in 1999, Conde Naste magazine voted this privately owned retreat as one of the top ten in the world. The island's Emerald Bay, with its superb sands and water, is a pure paradise for couples to swim and sunbathe. The beach is also where Spencer Chapman made his escape in a submarine from the Japanese during World War II, as recounted in his best-selling novel "The Jungle Is Neutral." The waters of Coral Beach are an underwater splendour with its magnificent coral reefs, while Royal Bay is perfect for windsurfing. Luxurious chalets on the island are a mix of Malay and Balinese architecture, and are romantically set out into the sea or on the hillside. Couples can expect only the best facilities to pamper them, such as jacuzzi, sauna, spa and posh restaurants. Pangkor Laut Island is a forty-minute boat ride from the coastal town of Lumut in Perak State. If money is no object, you can charter an airplane to land on neighbouring Pangkor Island and from there take a 15-minute boat ride across.

No. 2 Tioman Island, Pahang
In 1970, Time magazine ranked Tioman Island as one of the best ten "desert island escapes" in the world. A volcanic outcrop with several settlements, Tioman boasts of a landscape that is indeed spectacular. Lush jungles from its central mountain creep down to the white-coral, sandy beaches hugging the shores, while in the south, the twin peaks of Nenek Si Mukut and Batu Sirau rise to the clouds. Nearby, the Mukut Waterfall cascades down a granite peak. Lovers will be spoiled for choice in selecting a beach for themselves. For quiet strolls, there are trails leading from Tekek, the main settlement, northward to Salang and southward to Genting. For soft adventure, take the cross-island trail from Tekek to Juara on the east coast. Tioman is also a premier diving and snorkelling destination, and there are PADI dive centres in many hotels. For a romantic evening, enjoy a seafood dinner at one of the sea-front restaurants beneath casuarinas in the villages. A five-star hotel in Tekek allows couples to indulge in the pleasures of life.

No. 3 Langkawi Island, Kedah
On the fabled island of Langkawi, there are many areas where lovers can find ultimate peace and privacy. Two favourite enclaves for honeymooners are Datai Bay and Tanjung Rhu. The former is tucked in the northwest corner of Langkawi, and is home to two sophisticated resorts overflowing with luxury, such as spas and décor of volcanic rock. There are exclusive beaches for guests, and from the hotel balcony, newlyweds can admire the awe-inspiring view of the jewel-like sea towards Thailand. Fantastic beaches look out to the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. At low tide, couples can stroll to the islands of Pulau Pasir and Pulau Gasing. In the nearby mangrove swamp, eagles can be fed by hand. To shop like mad for your new home, pop over to Kuah, where there are lots of duty-free bargains.

No. 4 Batu Ferringhi, Penang
Batu Ferringhi, on the northern coastline of Penang Island is a honeymoon classic. The name means "Foreigner's Rock" and alludes to the visits by important personalities in historical times. Portuguese admiral Alfonso D'Albuquerque stopped at Batu Ferringhi in 1511 before sailing southward to conquer Malacca; St. Francis Xavier made a stopover in 1545; and Captain James Lancaster, founder of the East India Company, came ashore in 1600. Today, honeymooners can choose from sophisticated resorts, action-packed nightlife or exciting watersports along this stretch of beautiful and vibrant beach. On a clear day, take in the sight of a rock outcrop aptly named Lovers Isle. Or browse in the many art galleries and antique shops. When the sun has set, enjoy a delicious ikan bakar (grilled fish) dinner in the alfresco restaurants or snap up some trinkets from the bustling sidewalk bazaar. For sightseeing, take a memorable stroll through the labyrinth of alleys and stress in the old quarter of Georgetown, where history peeps from every nook and cranny.

Or watch a dramatic sunrise with the conical peak of Santubong to one side and fishing boats and islands on the other. Proboscis monkeys in Sabah Borneo

The Proboscis monkey is ancient to Borneo and belted to lowlands habitats. In Malaysian Borneo, the breed is broadcast and survives alone in abandoned pockets. The better accepted populations in Sarawak are in the west, in the areas of Samunsam and the Bako-Sarawak Mangroves areas. The Samunsam Wildlife Altar was acclimatized accurately to assure this citizenry of bill monkeys.

Recently gazetted extensions to this altar in 2000 accept brought the absolute breadth to 228 [km.sup.2], encompassing over 90% of the population's range. In Sabah, applicable populations of bill monkeys action in the freshwater wetlands of the Kinabatangan Floodplain, while the mangroves and estuaries of Brunei Bay, Brunei Darussalam, abutment addition population.

The altar straddles the boss Kinabatangan River, abreast Sandakan. The bill monkey may be the prime ambition of the 90-minute baiter cruise to Sukau, but the banks of Kinabatangan is a account anatomy of wildlife - crabs, belacak (mud skipper), eagles, bangau (egrets) and argent blade monkeys.

HOW TO GO THERE?

There are about 2 means to go about accepting to Sukau area, one is by baiter all the way which may booty 2hours meandering up the apathetic river or the added is to booty a 1 hour van or car ride on asperous approach oil acreage anchorage to the anchorage and again a 10 – 15min baiter ride to the resort. It is about appropriate that if you are abundant or if you accept a bad back, not to biking on the acreage road. The alley action is awful due to the rain and abundant abettor use and 45km at 20km/hr of this biking will absolutely be a aching activity if you are not acclimatized to it.

Normally, aloof to accomplish the cruise a little easier, abounding booty the tours out and break a day or two at resorts, homestays and hostels forth the kinabatangan river. The beat is actual agnate from one bout abettor to the other.

You can break at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge & Abai Jungle Lodge, Sabah.

Selingan Island is Protected areas and tourism in Sabah

Visitors who appear over for their Borneo wildlife acquaintance in Sandakan would best acceptable commence on a bend bout that includes a Kinabatangan river cruise, a appointment to the Sepilok orangutan centre, a expedition to the Gomantong caves, and to end the amazing wildlife chance – a night at the Selingan turtle island.

Selingan Island is one of a accumulation of arid islands straddling the Malaysian and Philippine boundaries lying aural the Sulu Seas. This array of islands namely three capital nesting islands - Pulau Selingan, Pulau Bakkungan Kechil and Pulau Gulisan, covers an breadth of 1,740 hectares and are adequate for the sole purpose of attention and canning of turtles and added abyssal animals inhabiting the area.

Selingan Island, one of the eight turtle islands that are adequate by law, (five are in the Philippines and three are in Malaysia) was the abutting stop and we were not disappointed. Not alone were our apartment aboriginal class, alone 20 guests were accustomed on an brief appointment that included cat-and-mouse for the behemothic turtles to access and watch them lay their eggs. It was abutting to midnight back they came but we were all advanced alive cat-and-mouse for the befalling to authority a turtle egg. However, no photos were accustomed and so the admonition I accept of Selingan Island is a photo of a adviser cadger instead.

We heard so abundant about the proboscis monkeys (they accept 24-hour erections) of Sabah and wondered area to acquisition a resort to bolt afterimage of these aberrant but ambiguous animals. Luckily for us, an associate in Selingan Island brought us to the buyer of a resort that was advancing achievement who acquiescently accommodated us and brought us alone a few anxiety abroad from a array of monkeys who gamely displayed their antics and aback airish for our cameras. The final stop was the Sepilok orangutan sanctuary, where, Cristi had a actual abutting appointment with an orangutan who acquiescently and acclaim stroked her hair. Not alone were we absorbed with these affable creatures but were additionally afraid at the assortment of birds that we saw and heard accustomed in the forest.

Accommodation:
Sabah Hotel, Sandakan, Sabah

The best gives a sense of Malaysia’s past are Waching in Malacca

For us, Malacca was the end of a 400-mile cab ride - which is what happens aback you get to a railway base and ascertain that the abutting alternation is due in 2010. Fortunately Malaysian taxis are bargain abundant to accomplish this an acceptable mistake, rather than a cher disaster. Anyhow, it was accepting dark, so we arrested in and headed out for a meal. Malacca is acclaimed for its ablaze Nonya cuisine and this didn't disappoint. Even our 18-month daughter, Polly, seemed to accept a acceptable timeit.

The abutting day I got up with Polly and took her out for breakfast. We absolved into boondocks branch for one of the stylish-looking cafés. The agitation is, annihilation in Malacca seems to accessible afore 9:30. Now, if you're on anniversary as an adult, that's fine. But aback you're on anniversary with a toddler who needs absorbing from dawn, it's not so good.

Still, it gave us a while to absorb up the town's celebrated atmosphere. Malacca was founded at the alpha of the 15th aeon by a Sumatran prince and, because of its cardinal area on the Malacca Straits, bound became the best important anchorage in south-east Asia. Chinese merchants settled, and the city's abundance admiring European absorption of the array that arrives heavily armed.

In the 16th century, it was baffled aboriginal by the Portuguese, again the Dutch, who controlled it for over 300 years afore ceding it to the British in 1824. The British, however, were added absorbed in adjacent Singapore, and Malacca anon became a asleep backwater.

The city's abatement meant that the admirable admixture of Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese and Islamic architectonics is abundantly as it was 100 years ago; beforehand this year it was fabricated a Unesco World Heritage Site. In a country area so abundant is new, Malacca is one of the few places area you feel as if you can get a handle on Malaysian history.

Eventually we begin an all-too- authentic-looking Chinese restaurant that was open. So we sat bottomward and ordered, application the all-embracing I'll-have-what-he's-having-gestures, in this case, a basin of noodles with pork and some affectionate of offal. My booty on $.25 is that it's a little like booze - acceptable stuff, but you absolutely shouldn't afore noon. My babe had no such advisedly and slurped up her noodles and agency $.25 to the articulate approval of our adolescent diners.

Breakfast over, we met my wife aback in the Old Town. Malacca is rather ambagious in this respect. Its two abundant attractions are the Old Boondocks and Chinatown (which is additionally old). The Old Boondocks contains added banderole attractions than Chinatown, but it has a aroma of Disney about it, and Chinatown is far added interesting. Nonetheless, we did a campaigning bout of the Old Town's attractions, which date from colonial rule. And, afterwards the arrant neophilia of best Malaysian cities, forts and broke churches accomplish for an acceptable change.

Then we alternate to our hotel. Initially I'd been a little aghast by our accepted affair high-rise. But that was until 11am. Again I realised Malacca is hot. So hot, in actuality that at one point I anticipation I was sunburnt. But no, it was aloof the calefaction of the sun on my neck. So, if there's one affair that's capital aback it comes to Malaccan accommodation, it's accepting a basin to lie by amid 11.30am and 2pm. As our auberge (the appropriately alleged Equatorial, for Malacca is two degrees North) had a agitating pool, its artful crimes were forgiven.

After our activated sunbreak, we absolved into active Chinatown. The streets are about absolutely lined with acceptable shophouses - a array of close booty on the London terrace – whose absorbing exteriors all accept that faded, afflicted attending western autogenous designers try so adamantine to replicate. Many accept been adapted into admirable boutiques and cafés, while a fair cardinal are abundant as they consistently accept been. Their abysmal interiors and blubbery walls and admirable tiled floors are absolutely what you charge in the city's arid climate. Interspersed with these were temples, mosques and the odd museum. It is, absolutely simply, a abundant abode to aberrate - and there's not abundant added you can ask of a neighbourhood.

The abutting day, afterwards a baiter cruise up the river, we apparent that Chinatown additionally has a appealing acceptable nightlife, article of a aberration in Muslim Malaysia. That black we enjoyed the atmospheric night bazaar and confined afore branch to a bounded restaurant for a basin of the ablaze bounded laksa brainstorm soup. This was followed by a "typical" pudding: a basin of baldheaded ice with blooming boilerplate jelly, attic milk, toffee booze and branch beans (sweetcorn was additionally available). It was decidedly good, although conceivably added hasty than good.

En avenue aback to the hotel, we marvelled at the aflame bike rickshaws: Malaccans like to personalise their vehicles, and these camp pedal-powered accessories are like the baby of a adaptable disco and a Mardi Gras float.

On our final morning, we abounding up on bargain jeans and malodorous durian doughnuts at the Melaka Mega Mall (for that's what it's called), and Polly and I ascended the affably abominable revolving examination tower. Again we headed into Chinatown for a little added arcade and lunch. Oh, and one added of those amazing desserts - this time with branch beans and sweetcorn.

GETTING THERE
Malaysia Airlines (0870 607 9090; http://www.malaysiaairlines.com) flies absolute to Kuala Lumpur.
Malacca is 90 afar south; taxis from the airport amount about £55 .
The Majestic (00606 289 8000; http://www.majesticmalacca.com; from £160) is the town’s best admirable hotel, but the Close (282 8333; http://www.equatorial.com; from £80) is bigger located.

Tips For Backpacking in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is one of the cheapest cities in Asia for a vacation. Foreign bill barter ante of the Pound Sterling and US Dollar, for instance, as adjoin the Malaysian Ringgit are awful favourable. Backpacking is accepted as the burghal has a actual low abomination amount and English is broadly spoken. If you charge directions, or ambition to adjustment aliment from a bell-ringer arrest blow assured that addition will be able to acquaint with you in English. However, some planning is in adjustment to amplitude your vacation money to the best if you are a backpacker.

CHEAP AIR FARES
Malaysia's AirAsia and Singapore's SilkAir are two bargain carriers that can fly you cheaply from abounding destinations about the apple to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore respectively. (From Singapore, you can booty a bus or alternation to Kuala Lumpur). For capacity of the flight schedules and fares of AirAsia and SilkAir, please analysis their websites. Addition Malaysian account airline is Fireflyz which caters mostly to calm destinations in the country; however, it links Kuala Lumpur with Medan and Bandar Acheh (both in Indonesia) and Phuket in Thailand.

To get the best prices for account airlines, bookings accept to be fabricated at atomic a few months ahead. It is additionally best to abstain the Malaysian academy holidays which abatement during December, mid-March and mid-August.

The airplanes of AirAsia acreage at the Low Amount Carrier Terminal (LCCT) about two kilometres from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at Sepang, which is 60 km from Kuala Lumpur. The cheapest way to get to KLIA from the LCCT is by shuttle bus operated by two companies; namely Nadi KL and Airport Liner. Book is alone RM 1.50 per being per way. The analeptic point is from Platform 8, bus base at Ground Floor, Car Park C. Frequencies of the buses are 15 - 20 minutes. From KLIA, the economical way to get to the basic is by airport coach. Fireflyz's aeroplanes acreage at Sultan Abdul Aziz Airport in Subang, about 15 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur.

WHERE TO STAY
The best accepted breadth for backpackers to break in KL is Chinatown. Its affection is Jalan Petaling (Petaling Street). Adaptation ranges from simple bed-and-breakfast inns with common bathrooms to one-star and two-star hotels that are air-conditioned. (Hotels in Malaysia are rated by a brilliant system, alignment from one to a best of bristles stars; those afterwards any brilliant appraisement are classified as "budget"). Addition advantage of blockage in Chinatown is its accurateness to Puduraya bus station. This is the capital base for buses activity to added cities in the country. Chinatown is additionally aural walking ambit to the KL Monorail base on Jalan Maharajalela and additionally the STAR Light Abuse Transit base abreast the Central Market. Chin Woo Stadium which has a pond basin that is accessible to the accessible for a nominal fee is aloof 20 account abroad by bottom from Jalan Petaling. Perched aloft a hillock, it is a abundant abode to air-conditioned bottomward afterwards a day of animated sightseeing.

My additional advocacy for adaptation is Brickfields, abreast Stesen Sentral (Central Station), which is the city's abuse busline hub. All Light Abuse Transit (LRT) trains stop here, including the KLIA Ekpres that plies to and from Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The best Hilton Kuala Lumpur and Le Meredian are amid aural the complex. However, aloof beyond Jalan Tun Sambanthan are affordable accommodations. They accommodate Auberge Summer View, De Sentral Hotel, Mexico Auberge and Auberge Florida to acknowledgment but a few -- they all appear with air-conditioning and absorbed bathrooms. A few inns that one rung bottomward the amount ladder are additionally available, including the YMCA. The abrogating point about this breadth is the abridgement of black activities. Also, aliment is mainly bedfast to vegetarian eateries and Indian fan-ventilated restaurants confined assistant blade back-scratch rice.

A advantageous acquaintance is the Malaysia Account Auberge Association at No. 52 Tengkat Tong Shin, 50200 Kuala Lumpur. Tel: +603-21412313. Fax: +603-21439313. Email: mbha1 @tm.net.my. Website: budgethotel.org.my

WHERE TO EAT
Finding bargain and aseptic aliment is apparently the atomic of all problems for backpackers. Countless alfresco stalls are begin in bell-ringer centres. Two accepted havens for bargain bell-ringer aliment are Jalan Alor and Jalan Petaling. A meal with a bake-apple abstract or bendable alcohol can amount as little as RM6! For added comfort, go to the aliment courts of arcade complexes, which are generally tucked abroad in the basement. Fast aliment outlets such as McDonald, Pizza Hut, Domino's Pizza, Kentucky Absurd Craven to acknowledgment but a few are broadcast in abounding genitalia of the city. For Indian fare, go to Lebuh Ampang; Malay aliment is ample in the districts of Chow Kit and Kampung Baru. Abstain 24-hour Mamak (Indian Muslim) eateries unless you demand to booty the slight accident of a abdomen upset. The aliment (fish, chicken, squid, etc) on affectation in bottle containers in such eateries may accept been acrimonious and re-heated endless times. Adjustment article that is adapted on the atom instead such as absurd rice, absurd noodles or craven chop to agreement that what you eat is fresh. To cut costs on food, my advocacy is to try roti canai (a blazon of pancake) in the morning which can amount as little as RM1.50 per piece. Variations such as roti canai with egg, charge or assistant are additionally available. Two or three pieces done bottomward with the "teh tarik" (literally agency "pulled tea" ) will accord you acceptable ammunition for your tramping around. All above arcade complexes additionally accept aliment courts that action belted aliment at appropriate prices.

TRAVELLING AROUND
Travelling about KL by auto can be an big-ticket affair. The book beat keeps active alike admitting the agent is ashore in a massive jam, and this can bake a aperture in your pocket. A artifice by a few black-sheep drivers is to booty the longest accessible avenue to your destination. Worst, a few drivers may debris to use the beat and assert on an absonant collapsed fee. On backing days, especially, it is a take-it-or-leave-it situation. Remember, there is additionally a customs for travelling afterwards midnight and for putting baggage in the boot.

Though buses awning best genitalia of the city, it can be difficult for foreigners to acquisition out the routes of anniversary bus. Best buses don't accept conductors, and cartage bead the actual book in bill into the admission automat machine. If you bead in balance fare, you will not be accustomed any change.

Despair not! The burghal has a arrangement of alternation systems (referred to as Light Abuse Transit or "LRT" in short) that run on animated rails, (and sometimes underground) that can whizz you from one allotment of the burghal to another, whereupon you can booty a abbreviate airing to your adapted destination. Abuse maps assuming the altered stops can be begin in all the alternation stations. Services usually alpha from 6am till midnight. Three LRT trains are in operation: STAR LRT, Putra LRT and KL Monorail. They anniversary accept a altered avenue but you can change trains at Stesen Sentral (Central Station).

AFFORDABLE SHOPPING COMPLEXES
Avoid all arcade malls in the city's Golden Triangle unless you aloof aim to browse around. This breadth is belted by Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Raja Chulan. Tucked aural the breadth are Lot 10, KL Plaza, Sungei Wang Plaza, BB Plaza, Low Yat Plaza and Starhill Arcade Circuitous that are targeted at middle- to aloof shoppers. The aforementioned admonition applies to the awful accepted Suria KLCC in the belvedere block of the PETRONAS Twin Towers and Mid Valley on the Federal Highway. However, affordable arcade complexes can be begin about Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, nicknamed "Kuala Lumpur's "Golden Mile". They accommodate Pertama Complex, Campbell Complex, and absolute aliment such as Mydin and Globe Silk Store. In the binding of Chinatown, Kotaraya Complex, UDA Ocean and S&M Arcade Arcade additionally action accomplished for value-for-money buys. Not to be absent is Jalan Petaling, which is chocked with stalls affairs about everything, abnormally bargain imitations of celebrated watches and covering appurtenances as able-bodied as pirated VCDs of the latest Hollywood movies. Haggling is the adjustment of the day. Awful accepted with tourists, Central Market on Jalan Hang Kasturi specializes in collectibles, souvenirs and additionally has an accomplished aliment court. Cultural performances are additionally captivated at appointed times, and best of all, they are free. Haji Taib Bell-ringer Centre in Chow Kit is acceptable for jeans and second-clothes but the breadth suffers from a bad reputation. "Pasar malam" or "night markets" are captivated in Kampung Baru and Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman every Saturday evening. These spots action accomplished opportunities to try belted book at bargain prices.

TRAVEL LITERATURE

Malaysian Orangutan Preservation at Bukit Merah Faces Wrath From Conservationists

Bukit Merah Laketown Resort under the microscope is Orangutan Island in Malaysia's north, billed as the world's only treatment and preservation facility for the endangered mammals.

Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, being one of Malaysia's premier eco-tourism destination in the northen region, the resort offers a wide variety of excitement with its Waterpark being the main attraction, the only conservational Orang Utan Island in Peninsular Malaysia and the unique Eco Park with its educational walk-in enclosures, where you can experience nature with eco-friendly animals.

Care that has been abundantly given to the animals, provided by a staff of seven nurses, is lost on environmentalists who insist that this is hurting instead of helping the orangutans.

The owners of the 35-acre island say the goal of the facility is to return the animals back to their natural jungle habitat, but so far none have been put back into the wild.

The environmentalists take issue with the fact that the primates wear diapers, interact with tourists, and are raised with 24-hour care from a staff of humans.

The majorities of the visitors are excited to play with the animals and are oblivious of the criticism.

"I don't think it is wrong keeping them here. It is a practical solution to save the orangutans and educate our children," said 26-year-old Vikki Kendrick from Britain.

Orang Utan Island is located within the exotic, eco-friendly getaway of Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, a 7,000 acre freshwater lakeside haven in Semanggol, Perak. The Orang Utan Island itself, which was formerly known as Pulau Panjang, comprises a vast 35 acre area, 5 acres of which has been set aside as a research centre for these endangered primates.

Top 5 Cheap Kuala Lumpur Hotels with full of traditional guesthouses

Top 5 cheap Kuala Lumpur hotels is still a traditional guesthouse stronghold, but there has been an increase in gussied-up guesthouses.

This top 5 cheap Kuala Lumpur guesthouse is an extremely popular stay with limited number of rooms but has cheerfully designed rooms for those choosing to stay in a more personal, relax and romantic. Its also easy to access to nearest shopping streets.

This top 5 cheap Kuala Lumpur hotels was released by www.guardian.co.uk, Monday 14 January 2008 13.10 GMT. Booking hotels can be done via email and telephone through attached contact no.

1. Number Eight Guesthouse
Escape from the budget crypts to this boutique-worthy guesthouse carved out of a row of shop houses. Rooms have the novel addition of windows and contemporary Asian-eque décor. The budget wing offers dorms and the boutique wing has private, en-suite rooms. There's generous hangout space and lots of chummy TV watching. To scratch that environmental itch, the hot water is solar heated.

INFO :
8-10 Tingkat Tong Shin, Bukit Bintang; Tel no : 603 2144 2050;

2. Pujangga Homestay
If you were from the Kuala Lumpur (KL) middle-classes, you might have grown-up in something akin to Pujangga Homestay. It's a simple residence separated from the street by a garden courtyard and has space for 11 guests in various room configurations (singles, doubles, triples). There's no décor to write home about, but that is part of the charm - the linens are department-store variety, the walls are the colour of putty, and the floors are swept clean. Such an unassuming setting is often garrulous in communicating a sense of place.

INFO :
21 Jalan Berangan, off Jalan Nagasari, Bukit Bintang; +603 2141 4243

3. Pondok Lodge

Enjoy the laid-back simplicity of Malay living at this low-key guesthouse. The rooms are a bit of a mixed bag, which means you should use your backpacker savvy and ask to see a room before bedding down for the night. But once you're settled in, relax on the rooftop terrace where the cool breezes and buddy mood will erase all the unknowns of travelling in strange lands.

INFO : 20-2C Jalan Changkat, Bukit Bintang; + 603 2142 8449; doubles from £8.60

4. Red Palm
Distinguishing one bare-bones guesthouse from another requires a sensitivity for camaraderie over amenities. This small and basic hostel excels in the bonding department, partly because the amenities are so skeletal. Rooms are barely private with air-circulating gaps near the ceilings and showers, that sometimes involve a queue. Overall setting is a hybrid of college dorm and off-campus apartments: couches are for kicking back, a communal kitchen is for instant noodle prep and staff are often remembered like chums by former guests.

INFO :
5 Tengkat Tong Shing, Bukit Bintang; +603 2143 1279

5. Tune Hotel
The budget air carrier Air Asia has transplanted its no-frills philosophy into the accommodation arena. Granted the sweaty guesthouses already have budget cornered, but Tune Hotel tweaks the model with an emphasis on sleeping: you get a name-brand mattress instead of a stuffed palette and a splash of colour on the walls. Rates are determined by demand and a la carte services, meaning for more ringgit, you can buy soap, air-conditioning, and fresh towels - the land-based version of the rolling refreshment carts.

Swine Flu Alert - Malaysia expands screening of visitors to all entry points

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has confirmed that no case of “influenza-like” illness with symptoms of swine flu infection has been found in Malaysia.

However, the Government is not taking chances with the outbreak that is already spreading across Mexico to other countries.

The ministry has already expanded its screening of passengers arriving at international entry points like KL International Airport, which it started on Monday, to the ground.

In Rantau Panjang, which borders Thailand, the health department began randomly screening those coming into Malaysia on foot.

“We are doing it as a precaution,” a doctor on site said. He set up an informal unit with five of his subordinates.

The ministry has taken measures to set up hotlines for the public to call for inquiries in Putrajaya and also started a 24-hour monitoring of the situation. The public can call 03-8881-0200/300 for enquiries.

Police personnel at Malaysia’s borders are on high alert to check any signs of the swine flu outbreak sneaking into the country.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said policemen would assist all border-control agencies to monitor for any signs of the disease at all entry points including airports.

“We are working closely with the Health Ministry to monitor the situation and assist in the screening process,” he told reporters after a visit to Hospital Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the 202nd Police Day yesterday.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Ismaiil Merican confirmed yesterday that no case of influenza-like illness with symptoms of swine flu virus had been reported in Malaysia. He said that based on surveillance of influenza-like illness, there had been no reported case.

He added that health officers at KLIA screened 428 passengers and airline crew flying in from areas with cases of swine flu for signs of the infection. Passengers and airline crew, he said, were also been given health alert cards and health declaration forms to fill.

“The screening at all international entry points continued yesterday. A technical committee meeting involving several agencies will also be held today to discuss other preventive measures and an integrated approach for the control of any infection,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Dr Ismail said that in view of the World Health Organisation’s decision to raise the swine flu alert to Phase 4 from Phase 3, which made the current situation just two levels away from a full pandemic, the ministry would continue to advise Malaysians to stay away from affected regions.

“This is particularly when the travel is unnecessary and they are not feeling well. Those who fall sick during their travel should seek medical treatment,” he warned.

In Kuala Lumpur, Bernama reports that the Foreign Ministry had asked all Malaysian missions abroad to continuously monitor and update the ministry on the swine flu outbreak in relation to Malaysians residing or travelling overseas.

“The 60 registered Malaysians residing in Mexico where the swine flu outbreak was first detected and another five in the accredited Central American countries are reported to be safe and free from the virus,” the ministry said in a statement.

The public is advised to report to the Consular Divison of the Foreign Ministry at 03-8887-4000 if they are aware or informed of any cases by their friends, relatives or colleagues currently overseas.

Sipadan Island Needs More Votes To Be One Of New 7 Wonders Of Nature

KOTA KINABALU, April 23 (Bernama) -- Pulau Sipadan, a diving haven off Sabah's east coast, needs more votes to qualify as one of seven new wonders of nature.

You have one voice, but seven votes. To make it as easy as possible, the nominees are sorted into continents and regions. First, select the region and then click on a nominee in the drop-down menu. You must select 7 different nominees. VOTE For SIPADAN ISLAND now

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said that as of Monday, Sipadan ranked 14th in the island category of the New 7 Wonders of the World Project, after climbing from 17th place a week before.

"Sipadan has been nominated to compete with 30 nominees in the island category.

"We need to climb three more places to qualify to the next preliminary round," he said at the Vote For Sipadan Campaign here today. His speech was delivered by his assistant, Bolkiah Ismail.

He said all that a voter needed was a valid email address to cast a vote via www.new7wonders.com.

"By being one of the seven new wonders of nature, it would boost the country's tourism industry, especially Sabah," he said, adding that the last day for voting was July 7.

Pulau Sipadan is now in 14th place in the race to be named one of the new Seven Wonders of Nature.

If the famed diving spot is to remain in contention, it must move up to 11th by July to qualify for the next round of the online election.

Top 10 Travel Destinations during Economic Crisis

Travel is a real art and traveling smart is a double pleasure as you come back home with both unforgettable memories and bucks in your pocket.

1. China and Asia in whole Asia is the only place where backpackers no longer need to decide whether they want to exhaust their bank account or experience second-rate service. While worldwide economic crisis and expensive Euro make trips to Europe costly, Asian countries seem to be the right location. Current stats show each year Americans prefer visiting more Asian countries while Europe stats are flat. China remains the most desired Asian destination showing an unbelievable 83% increase in trips comparing to previous year. What makes China so popular? Only in China any traveler can both explore one of the world’s most ancient civilizations and enjoy cheap rates with quality service. Also China is tending to become a shopper’s paradise - it’s hard to find something you cannot buy on Chinese markets. The prices are not just low; they tend to go to zero. Don’t forget to try Chinese food - it’s totally different from something you used to eat. By the way, if you have never been in any Asian country, you can save your money by doing all-in-one trips that have recently become very popular. This includes 14-21 day vacation throughout continent starting from Bangkok to Bali, Taipei and Tokyo.

2. Buenos Aires, Argentina
Argentina’s economy has suffered from huge collapse for about 10 years ago and even though that financial crisis is over, prices are still lower than in neighboring countries. You can rent a nice hotel room just for $90 a night and an evening for two in a good restaurant will cost you mere $50-60. By the way, local cuisine is truly awesome, so don’t be afraid of visiting local cafes and trying traditional dishes like roasted partridge or chicken with honey and sesame. Argentina is a motherland of the most passionate and impressive dance – tango. You can watch professional dancers performing both in hotels and streets of Buenos Aires. Argentinean tango looks really sexy and amazing but there’s one thing you can do to turn it to unforgettable memory – do a little tango yourself. There are multiple master classes for dancers of all skill levels. A group class with one of major Argentina’s tango choreographers will cost you just $6 per hour.

3. Little Corn Island, Nicaragua Have you ever been dreaming of visiting Costa Rica, but $300-$400 per night hotels make you forget about this destination? There is a less expensive solution. Nicaragua is a Costa Rica neighbor and by far the best place to save money. Even in hottest vacation season and holidays most expensive rooms cost under $150. Little Corn Island is a lovely tropical island, a true must visit place for travelers seeking a remote tropical paradise. It’s not as well known as other Caribbean destinations thus less crowded. At Nicaragua you can learn to dive or, in case you’re already certified, enjoy watching stunning reefs, sharks, tropical fish and even barracuda! All this is available at absolutely reasonable rates. By the way, Little Corn Island is a great place to visit with your friends as only here you can rent a whole bungalow for less than $50 a night. This is truly a place where economical crisis can’t make you scratch own head and think of price! Sure, there is no satellite TV or Internet, but do you really need them on a tropical island? Food is cheap as well - there are not so many places you can enjoy freshly plucked lobster for just $20.

4. Bulgaria Bulgaria is one of the oldest countries in Europe. Founded in 681, this country has a deep history and is yet full of medieval castles and archeological sights. For example, Valley of Kings is not only a historical treasure, but a real one as archeologists continue searching ancient gold treasures buried with Thracian forebears. Bulgaria is a place from where civilization has spread to other Balkan countries. You can yet find here most sophisticated goldsmiths, so you will surely find absolutely stunning and reasonably priced souvenirs in Bulgaria. While strong Euro has made famous Europe destinations somewhat expensive for American travelers willing to save money, Bulgaria remains highly affordable country. As this destination is not yet heavily touristed, you can feel true national colour and successfully combine ancient churches and monasteries with spas and sea resorts. Prices are just great - multiple $50-100 a night hotels and cheap local cuisine that varies from $5 to $7 a dish.

5. Portugal Portugal is the most affordable destination in Western Europe. As it’s not widely advertised and thus not known among tourists, Portugal is an affordable Spain or Italy substitute. When you decide to visit Portugal, first spend several days in country’s capital – Lisbon and then move your feet to the coast, for example to Porto. At Porto you can find anything a tourist needs – old charming city, beautiful hotels at highly competitive prices and multiple entertainment ideas. Just to mention, make sure you try local wine as it’s simply great. Latest economic crisis seems haven’t affected much on Portugal and prices are not skyrocketing at all. In Porto a room in luxury hotel with antique furniture, tile mosaics and patio full of exotic flowers will cost you as little as $75 a night. Food is also not expensive at all. One can easily find lots of old taverns there everyone is welcome to try local dishes. Portuguese are proud of their food and I must say it’s really awesome - cod with béchamel, grilled sardines and other fresh fish from local waters not only sound, but taste great.

6. Jordan If you think it’s time to explore Middle East, but would like to save money, for example, for your next vacation, Jordan will surely show you the heritage of this region including culture and food. Surely, it doesn’t look like Vegas-style Dubai, but it’s the right place to discover Muslim culture. By the way, even though Jordan is a Muslim country, tourists here are served wine or beer and hotels have night clubs. Prices in Jordan are close to Lebanon and Syria, but Jordan is by far a much peaceful place thus is better for tourists. While staying in Jordan don’t forget to visit Petra – one of the world’s seven wonders. Usually Petra is a tourist crowded place, so I’d recommend you to rent a car in Amman (it will cost you approx. $50 a day) and explore it yourself. The second must-visit place in Jordan is Dead Sea. It has the saltiest water in the world and is widely known for its healing power. There is a wide hotel choice in Jordan fitting every budget. Basically, a great room with everything you need costs $120-140.

7. Hoi An, Vietnam
Vietnam has everything that famous Thai resorts like Phuket and Koh Samui offer to tourists, but on sufficiently cut prices. Fight will be surely your most expensive cost item. Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a real diamond of Southeast Asia. This tiny, historical and charming coastline town is not just a great vacation destination, but also a perfect place for best souvenirs. Hoi An’s talented tailors will sew almost anything you want. If you have spare hundred bucks or two, pay your attention to silk couture apparel and accessories. In general, Hoi An is a great place to turn off your cell phone, forget about TV, newspapers and get rid of news about that annoying world financial crisis. Best hotel room in Hoi An (like The Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort & Spa) will cost you around $140. Vietnamese food is incredibly cheap – a dinner for two is just around $6. Local cuisine is rather delicious one and offers much pork, chicken and fresh vegetables.

8. Tunisia If the only thing you know about Tunisia is that first Star Wars desert locations were filmed there and keep thinking this place is for campers only, you’re somewhat mistaken. Over the last 10 years Tunisia had become a popular tourist destination and thus many world class hotels were built. However that doesn’t affect much on prices as local rates allow combining great rest and saving money. Tunisia has various sightseeing places like Zitouna Mosque built in 800s. Whole Old City is worth watching. If you are ready to spend a little more, you can stay in a luxury hotel surrounded by ancient ruins. A high tech suite with own terrace overlooking the Mediterranean is approximately $300 a night. Medina is a great place to kill time. This is the center of the city there one may find endless cafes, restaurants, jewelry, apparel, local crafts, souvenirs and other pieces of art.

9. Family visits are your best travel.
Let me give you one more idea. How about saving money by doing some local visits? I’m pretty sure your grandpa you haven’t visited for years although he lives in a neighboring state would be happy to listen to the latest financial news. Tell your children economic crisis is already knocking the door of your home, so no overseas travel in this or even next year. Anyway, you shouldn’t forget about your family members, so picnics with grilled hot dogs will help to spend great time with your family.

10. Let’s stick to home! Could that happen you still want to travel while whole world is suffering from economic crisis? No way, man! Don’t you need to pay out that endless home and car loan and have bills for education of your children? That’s it, so now it’s high time to save money and love the place where you live.

NEWS : 1,700 homestay participants nationwide for toilet maintenance and renovation, and for promotional activities.

2 Feb 2009 - For a start, RM400,000 has been allocated to 200 houses registered under the Penang Homestay Association and more funds would be disbursed according to the needs of each participant.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said more grants would be distributed to 1,700 homestay participants nationwide for toilet maintenance and renovation, and for promotional activities.

"Our aim is to give guests at homestays five-star toilet facilities," Azalina said at the launching of state Zoom Homestay programme yesterday in Balik Pulau.

She said efforts to promote Malaysia's homestay would be intensified in Europe and the United States to bring over more visitors who are interested in a traditional village experience.

Azalina expects the demand for homestays to intensify due with their lower charges compared with conventional hotels.

She predicted that tourists would still come to Malaysia despite the worldwide economic recession.

The recent political turmoil in Thailand for instance, had led to 2.5 million touristscoming to Malaysia in December, the highest number of arrivals in a single month last year.

White Rafting At Kiulu, Sabah, Malaysia

Mitabang Home Stay, Kg. Tulung, Kiulu, Sabah,Malaysia is one of the best homestay in Sabah.

Pick up from Kota Kinabalu city hotel in the morning and depart for Kiulu River (about 1½ hours drive). Northbound towards the lush valleys of Mount Kinabalu which takes you pass the town of Inanam and Menggatal. As you approach the small town of Kiulu in Tamparuli District, selection is made by the river guide for a suitable starting point. Upon arrival, you will be introduced the use of the equipment and briefed on the safety and rafting techniques.

The ride down one of Borneo's scenic rivers over gentle rapids, passes lush green jungle forests and Dusun orchards and villages.

Kiulu is a scenic countryside located 75 kilometers east of Kota Kinabalu, the gateway to Borneo Sabah. Kiulu covers the southern part of the district of Tuaran whose serene mountainous terrain forms part of the Crocker Range stretching to as high as 4000 feet above sea-level.

Rushing out of its highland forests are many streams and rivers which converged into the Kiulu valleys to form the grade 2 kiulu river, a hub for white water rafting and traditional bamboo rafting in Sabah . As a matter of fact, Kiulu is named after a tributary that meanders the Mongkonihab-Poturidong village into the main kiulu river.

Kiulu has further come into the tourism lime-light as a destination for river adventure through its annual indigenous eco-sports race namely the Kiulu 4M Bamboo Rafting Challenge which has now become a Annual State Tourism and Visit Malaysia Year event. This race involves four disciplines that start with the letter M. In the kadazandusun language, the 4M stands for: Manangkus (running), Mamangkar (bamboo rafting), Manampatau (swimming with a bamboo pole), Mamarampanau (walking or running on bamboo stilts).

Kiulu is also known for its peaceful and safe riverside camping at Malangang Camp Ground and river fish breeding conservation/protection efforts (known locally as “bombon/tagal”).

In addition, Kiulu offers a hospitable homestay service at Mitabang Homestay Kg. Tulung-Mantob, where one can have a taste of the warmth, peace loving and healthy life-style of the Sabah Borneo Dusun community.Villagers at Mitabang Homestay are close-knit, friendly and still adhering the noble traditions/cultural values of the dusun people. One of such values is the practice of “mitabang/” or “mogitatabang”, which means merrily helping one another or working together to do a heavy/big task. Mitabang/mogitatabang is prevalent in the livelihood of the villagers particularly in planting and harvesting hill/wet paddy. Hence, Mitabang Homestay is named to quest for a harmonious and better tomorrow.
