Taman NegaraThe World's OLDEST RAIN FOREST-

Straddling the borders of Pahang, Terenggganu and Kelantan, Taman Negara is a totally protected area of 4,343 sq. km., and is home to one of the richest and most complex ecosystems in the world.
A must-try attraction here is the canopy walkway, 30m high and stretching a distance of 500 m. It gives visitors a rare opportunity to view the jungle from above. Throughout the park, there are wildlife observation hides near.

Recreational Facilities

Taman Negara is a 4,343 sq km rainforest sanctuary. As one of the oldest tropical rainforest in the world, the possibilities for eco-tourism are immense. Here, visitors find endless ecological adventure and opportunity to observe diverse species of animal and plant life.

Here are some of the highlights found at Taman Negara:

Night Jungle Walk – Discover the side of the jungle which comes alive at night. Familiarize yourself with nocturnal plants and insects and savour a chance to spot animals up close at the Observation Hide.

Jungle Trekking at Bukit Teresek and Canopy Walkway – Hike up this 334m hill for panoramic view of Gunung Tahan and the magnificent forest canopies that cover the hills and valleys. Then, cross the Canopy Walkway, the world’s longest suspension bridge, 40 meters above fround and 530 meters long.

Boat Cruise to Lata Berkoh - Cruise along Sungai Tahan to relish the riverside flora and fauna and dip into the refreshing cascades at Lata Berkoh which form a natural Jacuzzi. Along the way, stop by the Fish Sanctuary for a chance to snorkel amongst fresh water fishes.

Cave Exploration – Home to various bats, racer snakes and many fascinating insects, exploring limestone caves such as Gua Telinga guarantees fun and excitement. For the more adventurous, opt for a longer trek and then spend a night in one of these caves – Kepayang Besar, Kepayang Kecil, Luas or Daun Menari.

Shooting the Rapids at Kuala Trenggan – An exhilarating ride that faces seven rapids promises a wet and wild experience! Fishing and bird-watching (with more than 300 species recorded) are also popular sport here.

Orang Asli Settlements - “Orang Asli”, the local natives, are gentle folk who lead a nomadic lifestyle in Taman Negara. They are called Batek and their settlements are found along the trails whilst, some are accessible by boat.

Fishing – One of the main attractions of Taman Negara, it is best carried out during the drier months of the February to April and June to August. Anglers will need permits, which are issued at RM10 per rod.

Wildlife observation hide (Jungle hide) – Spend nights hidden up in the trees while waiting for a tapir, bear or elephant to appear. Most hides are built overlooking saltlicks, from which some animals obtain necessary minerals. Except for Bumbun Tahan, which is five minutes away, most require either a boat ride or a few hours walk to get to it.

Mountain climbing – The more adventurous can try climbing Gunung Tahan, the highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia. This challenge demands will power, physical fitness, good equipment and a guide. The trail is 55km from Mutiara Taman Negara.

Four Steps Waterfall – The eastern flanks of Gunung Tahan and Gunung Gedong drop off very sharply into the headwaters of Sungai Tahan. One of the tributaries in the Ulu Tahan plunges and cascades spectacularly down the mountainside in what is known as the Four Steps Waterfall.

Ma Daerah Turtle Sanctuary

Located 125km from Kuala Terengganu, Ma’Daerah is the first turtle sanctuary in Malaysia to be managed by the government, the private sector and an NGO.

It is the second largest turtle sanctuary after Rantau Abang.

Established as a sanctuary since 1999, Ma’Daerah aims to provide a stretch of undisturbed beach for nesting turtles and increased protection for eggs, to improve the monitoring and recording of nesting and to instil public awareness about turtle conservation.

It is estimated that nearly half of all the green turtles in Peninsula Malaysia land at Ma’Daerah. Other species to land there are the Olive Ridley turtle and the painted terrapin (currently listed as critically endangered).

Ma’Daerah also serves as a hatchery for turtle eggs collected from nearby beaches in Chagar Hutang, Rhu Kudung and Tanjung Batu.

F1 fan travels To Malaysia for speed thrills and Cheaper Accommondation

When the Formula One season kicks off this Sunday with the Australia Grand Prix, many Indian enthusiasts would have travelled Down Under to catch the action live on the fast tracks.

Still many more will make a pit stop at Malaysia the week after to watch their favourite speed kings. And as the season progresses, F1 aficionados will travel even further to be part of the fun.

Over the last few years, the interest in F1 has increased. Malaysia continues to be a hot favourite, but many have also travelled to Shanghai and Dubai," says P Srinivas, senior VP, Special Interest Tours, SOTC.

The Sepang Grand Prix in Malaysia clearly ranks as the favourite among Indians. The fact that it's closer than other circuits is a plus point for Malaysia.

Sepang will again play host to Round 2 of the FIA Formula One Grand Prix World Championship in 2008, which many believe is the real start of the championship battle for the world crown.

The new 2008 season opens in Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne on March 16 as the teams and drivers get their first taste of competition after months of wait and suspense; testing and experimenting; hoping that they have finally found the perfect set up their race machines.

More often than not, the teams usually struggle at the Australian Grand Prix as they learned more about themselves, their drivers and their opponents. Moreover, the contest around a tight street circuit of Albert Park provided additional limitations for the teams and drivers to push themselves to their true best.

Hosting the 10th edition of the Formula One Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix from March 21 to 23, Sepang will again provide the stiffest test for the teams and drivers with its challenging weather and the demanding 5.543-km circuit.

“The Malaysian GP has always been the race eagerly waited by the teams and drivers as they prepared themselves for what is usually their biggest test of the season due to the challenging weather and humidity,” says SIC Senior General Manager Datuk Azmi Murad.

EXPERIENCES:
Jimmy Xavier Harrison said :

Hi I’m Jim from Bristol,..I shall say that this is one of the best track in the world., Malaysia is always the best place to relax and chill.
Unlike the boring Singapore..everything’s just same and plain, lame skycrapers and people in the street. That’s what the so-called unique Singapore was.

While the F-1 is going to kick start in the street of Singapore, its still went the same..cause its already done in Monaco, and it happens in the nite? Owh c’mon don’t tell me that you gonna have to pay more taxes to cover the overall cost just for the lights?..

Bruno said:
I have been going to Sepang for the past 8 years and never been disapointed… We would usually get a group of 4-5 friends drive up from singapore on Friday or Saturday night - Stop by Mallaca - or straight to KL. check in our hotel and party the night away… Drive from downtown KL on Sunday to the ciruit ( It takes about an hour if you’re early.. or 3 if you leave after 11.00am ) The car park has improved every year and it’s now a breeze to drive in & out of the circuit. The frst year it took us almost 3hrs just to get out of the Field-carpark- but now you can be on the Highway within 45 mn.
The first time we went there we sat on open stands at turn 14 ( now non-existant) no shelter, bloody hot, but right on the restart to the grandstand straight. ( Great accelerations views) the year after I took the open field at turn 8. Still no shelter and we melted under our umbrellas that’s when I decided that every other year we will get the covered open area @ turn 10/11 and that’s where we’ve been every year since. Beautiful track, great people in Malaysia and the best atmosphere in downtown Kuala-Lumpur on Saturday night.
See you all in Singapore on 28th Sept
Bruno

Homestay in Malaysia

Arriving in Malaysia, you land in the ultra modern Sepang International airport and ride into Kuala Lumpur where you marvel at the tallest twin towers in the world, Petronas Towers. After checking into a 200 rooms hotel, you take to the shopping mall located below the Twin Tower. Most people around you seem hurried to get somewhere or busy chatting away into their cell phones. But the real Malaysia is not all this but something else as well. Many of the population still live in a unhurried and rather charming and traditional lifestyle, where time seems to go at snails pace and the air clean and fresh. Treat yourself to a village(Kampung in Malay) Homestay in Malaysia.

Be "adopted" by a family and be treated as a member of the family for the duration of your stay. To get a better appreciation of the culture, you may wear traditional attire, go fishing in a river, play kites with the children, eat simple local food, observe local customs, architecture, and furniture and participate in village activities. As they are mostly a Muslim village, there is no alcohol and it is respectful to dress modestly. Many villages still rely on agriculture as their primary source of income.
